The Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce in San Francisco & Silicon Valley enjoyed holding an interactive webinar with Alexandra Hoffmann on March 25, 2021.

Alexandra Hoffmann is the CEO of Alexandra Hoffmann Consulting (AHC), helping crisis management leaders and teams thrive through crises. AHC is a woman-owned company that promotes diversity and blends complementary professional expertise, background, and experience through various partnerships.

During this webinar, Alexandra covered the art of leading your team through a crisis and being resilient. The engaging workshop covered tools to boost your emotional intelligence, and that we first need to understand the 3 C of Resilience: crisis, change, and conflict. Conflict starts within yourself. Therefore, learning how to be aware of our emotional response to events is essential to be more conscious of our actions and behaviors.

The webinar’s main takeaway is that successful leadership in crisis management is characterized by leaders who can control their stress and show confidence in themselves. According to a Harvard study, 88% of the participants evaluated successful leaders by being confident and 86% by managing stress[1].

2021 is still uncertain; hence, we need to develop essential skills to handle constant change times. Based on a Forbes article from November 2020[2], here are the top 10 skills to develop:

  1. Growth Mindset
  2. Critical Thinking
  3. Continuous Learning
  4. Survival Skills
  5. Personal Resilience
  6. Flexibility
  7. Dedication
  8. Coaching Mindset
  9. Comfort with Ambiguity
  10. Thriving in a Virtual Environment

To approach these skills set, Alexandra proposes some reading recommendations, for example, the book written by the US Navy admiral. You can find the complete reading recommendation list here.

“Sticking to a routine no matter what is the only way to grow and strengthen this muscle of ours. Why? Because it is incredibly arduous to stick to a daily routine no matter what. So people who stick to it build character. They grow more dedicated every day, more curious to see what comes next, and if by any chance they miss one day, they go right back at it more engaged than ever.”

Alexandra Hoffmann, CEO of AHC

In conclusion, here are some small tools to help you deal with a crisis. First, ask questions and for other people’s perspectives. The way forward is together, and we cannot know what challenges might lay ahead if we do not ask questions. Secondly, pursue the “good stuff.” Think and reflect about three good things that have happened to you daily, even the smallest ones:

  • Why did this happen?
  • What does this mean to me?
  • What can I do tomorrow?
  • How do I, or others, contribute?

Finally, we need to continue asking questions, writing down our thoughts, being proactive in our observations, and taking charge. If you are interested to learn more or reaching out to Alexandra Hoffmann, you can find the contact details below.
