Climate change is the biggest global threat of our time. Our new member, Svensk Klimatcertifiering, helps companies and organizations structure their sustainability goals as well as methods of measuring and follow-up.  By actively working towards their sustainability goals, these organizations can earn a climate certificate and the right to label their company with the Climate Certificate brand.

We are already experiencing the effects of global warming with heat waves, flooding, wildfires, hurricanes, droughts and other extreme weather events. The decade 2000 to 2009 was hotter than any other decade in at least the past 1,300 years. The past five years have been the hottest ever measured. These horrifying records will continuously be broken if we do not act now.

“It is not enough to plan for what’s going to happen in 2030 or 2050. In order to avoid a catastrophe, governments, corporations and individuals need to make conscious decisions today, tomorrow and every day from now on”, said Roland Ekstrand, founder of Svensk Klimatcertifiering.

The climate certification process starts by the companies making an inventory and mapping all factors impacting the environment. A so-called Lifetime Analysis is a useful tool to understand how the climate is affected in different stages of a product’s life cycle; from choices of material to transportation and recycling.  Based on the status analysis, the organization then chooses which parameters to work with, sets goals and methods of measuring goal achievement, preferably using standards such as Greenhouse Gas Protocol for measuring carbon dioxide emission. The companies’ climate goals and progress should be transparent to the general public.

Companies which go through the process of climate certifying their businesses will earn the right to use the brand label “Klimatcertifiering” (for Swedish companies) or “Climate Certificate” (for international companies and organizations). The brand label is a guarantee to the consumers that the companies are transparent with their sustainability work and that they are actively working on solving the climate challenges we are facing. The label is registered in the EU, USA, Canada and China.

“While governments struggle to find solutions they can agree on, I am confident that individual consumers will want to choose sustainable options. Thus, the usage of the Climate Certificate label will be a business advantage”, said Roland Ekstrand.

Svensk Klimatcertifiering has some innovative partners, such as Ozontech, which uses a technology to make ozone extract pollution from air and water, Globe Water, which specializes in removing contamination or chemicals from soil, and Koljern, which builds constructions that are self-sufficient in energy. Now, they are looking to connect with American companies interested in becoming partners to market the brand in the U.S.
