Green burgers – a boost for impact investments
Silicon Valley is the number one spot for electric cars and solar panels. And as a state, California dominates in green initiatives and efficiency.
Even so, finding venture funding has been a contrary story for many cleantech startups coming to Silicon Valley.
This could be about to change.
A growing number of so-called impact investors are looking for investments that generate a measurable, beneficial social or environmental impact alongside a financial return. And they seem to like burgers, at least as a starter.
Californian startup Beyond Meat raised nearly a quarter of a billion dollars to grow its line of plant-based meats, with shares rocketing in their public debut in May this year.
Rival Impossible Foods, based in Redwood City, are planning for a future IPO but the CEO said earlier this year that it is no rush. Investors wanting to invest before the public offer still got the message, the latest round of fundraising yielded $300 million.
This is good news. For the climate, and for Sweden that is known for having a thriving scene with cleantech startups.
